Mainsheet blocks explained – From Dinghies to Yachts
The mainsheet system is the heart of your sail trim. With the right blocks, trimming becomes smooth, efficient, and enjoyable.
Why mainsheet blocks matter
Mainsheet blocks reduce load by creating mechanical advantage (purchase). The right combination makes a powerful sail manageable.
Key terms
- Purchase ratio – Mechanical advantage of the system (e.g., 2:1, 4:1, 6:1).
- Becket – Fixed point on a block for rope termination.
- Ratchet block – One-way resistance to ease handling under load; e.g. Harken autoratchets switch automatically between free-running and ratchet.
- Swivel base – Block plus cam cleat on a rotating pedestal at the trimmer’s position.
- Soft-attach blocks – Lightweight, reduce metal contact; popular on performance boats.
- Cam cleats with fairleads – On swivel bases or inline for ergonomic access during high-load manoeuvres.
Systems by boat type
Smaller boats: Tackle with multiple sheaves, typically 1:4 or 6:1 purchase, often with a cam cleat.
Larger yachts: Winch-operated mainsheet. Common layouts are a German sheeting system or a 4:1 mid-boom purchase led to a cockpit winch.
Choosing blocks
- Single block – Simple and light.
- Double or triple blocks – More purchase, less effort.
- Ratchet blocks – Extra control when hand-trimming.
- Swivel base systems – Clean, ergonomic trimming in the cockpit.
